Freddy Arteel is one of Belgium's leading clarinetists. He was principal clarinet of the Philharmonieorkest Antwerpen for 26 years, and is a member of the faculty at the Koninklijk Muzickonservatorium in Ghent. Professor Arteel has recorded extensively and performs with the Ensemble Contrasts.

Michael Burns, bassoon, is Associate Professor of bassoon at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He holds the B.M. degree from the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, the M.M. from the New England Conservatory, and the D.M.A. from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Burns has performed in numerous professional orchestras including the Cincinnati and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestras and played Principal in the Midland/Odessa, Richmond and Abilene Symphonies, and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Burns remains active as a solo and chamber performer with numerous performances at International Double Reed Society conventions, recitals and master classes throughout North America and the South Pacific, and at several leading Universities and Conservatories internationally.

In summers, Burns is associated with the Eastern Music Festival and the Bands of America Summer Symposium. He is also an active composer with many of his pieces being published by BOCAL Music and frequently performed throughout the country. His mentors include William Winstead, Sherman Walt, Leonard Sharrow, and Colin Hemmingsen. He is archivist for the International Double Reed Society and was co-host for the IDRS 2003 Conference in Greensboro, NC.

Carla Copeland-Burns, flute, has appeared with numerous orchestras, chamber ensembles, and in recitals throughout the United States, Canada, the U.K. and New Zealand. An avid teacher, Burns has taught at Mars Hill College, UNC-Greensboro, Indiana State University, the New England Music Camp, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Division.

Burns currently serves as the Piccoloist for the Greensboro Symphony, Principal Flute for the Salisbury Symphony, flutist for the Cascade Wind Quintet and is a frequent performer with the North Carolina Symphony, Carolina Ballet, and the Opera Company of North Carolina.

She holds degrees from Florida State University and the New England Conservatory, and is a DMA candidate at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

faculty photoKurt Kellan

Kurt Kellan was born and raised in Chicago and attended Indiana University, where he studied with Philip Farkas. While at Indiana, Mr. Kellan was principal horn with the Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra and Indiana Wind Ensemble. Mr. Kellan has performed in orchestras for the Joffrey Ballet, New York City Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre, and for the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1973, he was awarded the position of Second Horn with the Milwaukee Symphony, and in 1976 became Principal Horn of the Regina Symphony. In 1979, Mr. Kellan moved to Calgary where he held the position of Principal Horn with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra until June of 2000.

Mr. Kellan has been guest first horn for the Indianapolis Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Toronto Symphony, and the Vancouver CBC Orchestra. He has long been in demand as a music teacher, having taught at the University of Calgary from 1982-2000, Mount Royal College from 1986-1999, and the University of Regina from 1976-1979. He also taught at the Saskatchewan School of the Arts and Music Camrose. Presently, Mr. Kellan is an assistant professor of music at the University of Victoria. Mr. Kellan continues to do solo performances and has frequently been heard as a soloist with the CBC.

faculty photoNicholas Morrison

Nicholas Morrison is Professor of Music and Associate Director of Bands at Utah State University, where he also directs the Summer Music Clinic and the Summer Alumni Band.

He is frequently called upon as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor, and has served as chair of the Research Committee and Editorial Board of the College Band Directors National Association. He has served as director of Utah State's Aggie Marching band and the Band of the Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame.

He has appeared as soloist with the Orchestre Philharmonique Ste. Trinité in Haiti, with the Notre Dame, New World, and Arcata String Quartets, and with the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra., and has performed as clarinetist with the South Bend, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Utah Symphony Orchestras and the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra.

faculty photoLeslie Timmons

Leslie Timmons is an active recitalist on both flute and recorder and a member of the Logan Canyon Winds, the faculty woodwind quintet. She is responsible for the Flute Studio, including private instruction, masterclasses, coaching chamber ensembles, and directing the Utah State University Flute Choir. She holds degrees in Flute Performance and Music Education from Michigan State University and completed post-graduate work at the Orff Institute/Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Music education activities include presentations at state and national conferences, curriculum specialist for the Cache Children's Choir, and clinician for the Teacher Training Program of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association.
